INDUSEM Leaders Speak at United Nations Automobile Conference

INDUSEM Partner- The Institute of Road Traffic Safety and Education (IRTE) in partnership with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration of USA, the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways of the Government of India, FIA foundation, United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP) and the Working Party 1 on Road Traffic Safety of the united Nations Economic commission for Safety of Powered Two wheelers and Vulnerable Road Users organized “Powered Two Wheeler Conference” at IRTE’s College of Traffic Management, Faridabad, NCR Delhi between 28 and 30 November 2016.

This High Level Meeting was specially focused on South East Asia region. The occasion saw the participation and involvement of leaders from various disciplines, industries and public health organizations.

The conference was aimed to develop a set of strategies for Powered Two Wheeler safety for South Asian countries to achieve the Decade’s Road Safety Goals particularly to reduce the number of Powered Two Wheeler crashes and associated burden of injuries and its sequel.

The discussions held were focused to develop implementable strategies’ and achievable standards with reference to the western counterparts to fulfill the needs of the vulnerable road users in this region. Although the conference put emphasis on South Asian countries, it is expected that its conclusions may be transferred to other parts of the world that face similar problem and struggle with limited resources.

Speaking at This meeting INDUSEM, investigators from All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi, KGMU, Lucknow and Narayana Medical College Hospital, Nellore presented the date on the Magnitude and spectrum of injuries sustained in road traffic accidents among two wheeler riders and correlation with helmet use.

The INDUSEM Leaders voiced with great concern the outcomes of their research that the use of helmet in motorzed two wheeler users is suboptimal and there is a need to promote the good quality helmet use in motorized two wheeler riders (driver as well as pillion) and to better understand the injury pattern and economics involved there is also need more research.

Police department suggested adding some x factor to the helmets to make them more appealing and attractive for users and improved and aggressive advertising too. Use of low quality cheap helmets with fake ISI marks offer little or no protection at all to the rider. Use of high beam while driving at night by most of the two and four wheel drivers even on well-lit city roads has been a generous contributor to the rising graph of accidents too.

Other Data Management Vulnerable Road Users topics discussed with participating representatives of Asian nations were about Pedestrian, Bicyclist, Disabled, Children, Elderly People, Man pulled, Animal pulled transport and carriage vehicles. At last the Cross-Cutting Issues involved Awareness, Policy (laws, codes, rules, and regulations), Engineering, and Enforcement.
