It is with Great Pride that INDUSEM and The Academic College of Emergency Experts in India dedicate EMERALD: The Emergency Departments Quality Certification Program in partnership with National Accreditation Board of Hospitals and Health Care (NABH) Providers.

A sudden serious clinical event can distort the cognitive judgment of any individual would manage to rush the victim to the nearest health centre and expect the healthcare professionals present there to handle the situation thereafter and do whatever it takes to restore the victim’s health.

Emergency care however, is a far more complex subject deeply engaging a confluence of empathy, presence of mind, equipment, precise clinical knowledge and trained procedural skills.

The reputation of the hospital is dependent on the quality of care it provides and more so in Emergency Situations.  The most important question of whether emergency care provided even in paid private setups is really benchmarked for quality; remains a major challenge.

The National Accreditation Board for Hospitals and Healthcare Organizations is largely responsible for bringing in this movement towards benchmarked quality to Indian hospitals. A lot of hospitals have recognized the need and benefits of adopting standard operating protocols in most parts of the hospital and consequently been awarded accreditation for the same.

Emergency Department of a Hospital is the first point of contact for a patient seeking acute care at a hospital.

Emergency medicine as a clinical specialty, as an academic curriculum and as a distinct department within the hospital are relatively nascent ideas in this country.

Most hospitals have a nominal casualty that functions as a gateway for diverting emergencies to ICUs or other hospitals without necessarily understanding the complete extent of the clinical event, the ideal management for the same and the need to measure and audit the performance of the department on a periodic basis for further learning and improvement.

This is what forms the basis for a separate and detailed quality certification process for Emergency Departments.

Given the clinical, emotional and legal repercussions of how the patient is managed in the emergency, the need and scope for standardization is tremendous. Not only does it assure the critical patient of being managed using evidence based protocols, but it also shifts the thrust from an unpredictable personnel-dependent approach to a more stable and defined systems approach, reducing the likelihood of human judgment errors.

“INDUSEM-ACEE leaders played a defining role with our partners at NABH to bring EMERALD -The Quality Program for Emergency Departments in India. The EMERALD Initiative started in 2014 and today it is with pride that NABH-A National Accreditation Body has commissioned benchmarks to access, maintain, and promote quality of Emergency Medical Care. We at INDUSEM along with our partners at NABH and The Academic College of Emergency Experts in India and The Emergency Medicine Association are proud to dedicate EMERALD to the nation. We are committed to make care better for all patients arriving at Emergency Departments across India. We request all Emergency Medicine Departments to get EMERALD Certification so we can bring quality processes in Emergency Medical Care. EMERALD CERTIFICATE: MEANS A DISTINGUSIHED RECOGNITION OF QUALITY EMERGENCY CARE!” Stated INDUSEM CEO and Chairman of ACEE Dr. Sagar Galwankar
