The Emergency Medicine Association of Kerala held its Annual Conference “EM KERALA22’ on September 2nd and 3rd at Thiruvalla. It was hosted by Believers Church Medical College Hospital and Pushpagiri Medical College Hospital both NMC recognized Institutions of Medical Training and Patient Care.

Undergraduates (UG), interns, nursing staff, Emergency Medicine residents and academic faculty were in attendance led by Dr. Roney Thomas, Dr. Vivek Gopinathan, Dr. Arjun James along with their organizing team for EMKERALA22.

Workshops in ECG and Trauma were held  at Believers Church Medical College Hospital. Several young and dynamic Emergency Academicians took the floor and conducted a one of a kind – Interactive ECG class and workshop primarily teaching the basics and interpretation of ECG.  It was attended by over 250+ participants from various institutes across Kerala. The Trauma workshop was an insightful session focussing the Wrong and Correct methods of assessment and stabilization of a trauma victim. Both the workshops were well received by all the participants and had an overwhelming positive feedback. The day finished on a high with an in depth and interactive EM-Quiz which had over 20 teams participating in the event.

The Didactic Component of the conference was held at Pushpagiri Medical College Hospital. The conference kicked off with an insightful class on How to read a Journal which was followed by Case presentation Competition. Among 30+ teams that had submitted abstracts, the top 5 presentations discussed their case and approach which was an interactive, exam oriented, in depth assessment by various faculty. Postgraduates also had the opportunity for poster presentation where more than 20 PG’s registered. There was also classes by young Emergency Faculty on Recent Management Guidelines and updates for the common conditions usually presenting in Emergency department. The afternoon session focussed on Newer and lesser known fields – Wilderness Emergency Medicine and Conservational Emergency Medicine. This was followed by a session which gave an insight about issues and need of Women Empowerment in Emergency Medicine. The Conference ended on an academic high with an in depth – Journal Club workshop focussing on how to read, interpret and do critical appraisal of an article and journal which was received extremely well by the postgraduates.

EMA Leaders from Kerala have always been a beacon of light and leadership in Academics. Kerala’s enthusiastic young EM specialists came together after a break of 3 years due to the COVID pandemic. EMA Leaders Dr. Vimal Krishnan (Principal Secretary, EMA, India),  Dr. Mohammed Haneef M (Secretary, EMA South Zone), Dr. Linu Sekhar M (Undersecretary, Kerala State Chapter, EMA) commended the hard work of the EMKERALA22 Team.

About Believers Church Medical College Hospital (BCMCH)
