Eighteen years ago, on 21 July 2009, Academic Emergency Medicine was formally recognized as a specialty by the then Medical Council of India. Since then, 21 July has been celebrated across the nation as EM Bharat Divas, commemorating this landmark moment in the evolution of Emergency Medicine in India.

This year marks the 18th year of Academic Emergency Medicine in India—a journey that has transformed emergency care and education across the country.

INDUSEM, together with All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi (AIIMS New Delhi), played a monumental role in the birth and development of Academic Emergency Medicine in India and have continued to be instrumental in shaping and spearheading the specialty toward its future.

The landmark EM Bharat Divas celebrations were hosted under the leadership of the Department of Emergency Medicine at AIIMS New Delhi, where INDUSEM Award winner Dr. Nikhil Tandon serves as Director.

A unique highlight of the celebrations was EDUSphere, an innovative initiative at AIIMS that brings together the creativity of physicians in training with the mentorship and guidance of faculty. The result is a phenomenal creative exhibition showcasing diverse perspectives in Emergency Medicine, along with essential emergency and lifesaving skills.

The celebration brought together doctors, nurses, paramedical staff, and schoolchildren, creating a vibrant platform for learning, collaboration, creativity, and community engagement.

The occasion also provided an opportunity to remember and honor the visionary leadership of Dr. Praveen Aggarwal, Dr. Murmu, Dr. Bhoi, and ACEN Director Ms. Nirmal Thakur, whose contributions played a historic role in bringing Academic Emergency Medicine to AIIMS to where it stands today.

Reflecting on the journey of Emergency Medicine in India, INDUSEM Founder and CEO Dr. Sagar Galwankar stated:

“INDUSEM championed the growth of Academic Emergency Medicine in India, and this growth remains the single most important factor that catapulted the sustainable development of emergency care for over a billion citizens of India. The INDUSEM AIIMS New Delhi Partnership not only established Academic Emergency Medicine at AIIMS but also spread the same spirit across BHARAT”

Dr. Galwankar further emphasized the spirit behind EDUSphere:

“Collaborative creativity is the heart of vibrant academia. What better way is there to celebrate EM Bharat Divas than to have EDUSphere serve as a perfect demonstration of this philosophy?”

EDUSphere on EM BHARAT Divas 2026 at AIIMS New Delhi was more than a celebration—it was a powerful reflection of the journey, creativity, collaboration, and collective vision that continue to shape the future of Emergency Medicine in India.
