As the premier national epicenter for acute care excellence, the Institute of Medical Sciences (IMS) at Banaras Hindu University (BHU), Varanasi, recently played host to EMINDIA 2026—the 22nd All India Conference of Academic Emergency Medicine—alongside EPICON 2026, the 9th Annual Emergency Pediatrics & Injuries Congress. Held from September 9 to 13, 2026, this high-profile academic convergence brought together over 500 delegates, leading clinicians, researchers, and policy experts from across India and internationally. Operating under the overarching theme of ECO Services, representing Emergency, Critical Care, and Operative Services, the congress focused intensely on translating clinical trials into bedside protocols, scaling systems-level infrastructure, and fostering indigenous research methodologies across resource-variable healthcare settings.
Central to the monumental evolution, institutionalization, and academic maturation of emergency medicine in India is the visionary leadership of Dr. Sagar Galwankar. Serving as the Chief Academic Director of the Academic College of Emergency Experts (ACEE) and Professor of Emergency Medicine at the University of Florida, USA, Dr. Galwankar has spent over two decades orchestrating a paradigm shift in how acute care is delivered, taught, and researched across the Indian subcontinent. His foundational work through the INDO-US Emergency and Trauma Collaborative (INDUSEM) has systematically bridged international academic standards with grassroots clinical realities. By designing rigorous fellowship programs, establishing standardized residency training modules, and championing broad-based professional recognition systems, Dr. Galwankar has been instrumental in elevating emergency medicine from an informal triage function into an independent, board-certified medical specialty in India. At EMINDIA 2026, his strategic direction provided the intellectual backbone for integrating advanced clinical protocols, fostering mentorship networks for young investigators, and launching transformational research platforms.
The scientific program of the congress kicked off with an intensive, methodology-driven Skill Mela on September 9, followed by specialized workshops addressing advanced critical competencies. Delegates engaged in rigorous, hands-on modules covering mechanical ventilation, advanced Point-of-Care Ultrasound (POCUS) thoracic applications, POCUS-guided nerve blocks, acute ophthalmologic emergencies, and high-risk obstetric emergencies. Throughout EPICON 2026, faculty spotlighted specialized knowledge in pediatric emergency medicine, advanced trauma life support, and standardized resuscitation frameworks. These specialized pediatric tracks and trauma modules were spearheaded by the academic design of INDUSEM leader Dr. Neha Thakur Rai, Professor of Pediatrics at Dr. RMLIMS, whose work on the foundational Pediatric Trauma Resuscitation Manual (PTRM) and standardized pediatric simulation curricula continues to redefine pediatric survival metrics across resource-limited settings. The integration of adult and pediatric emergency protocols ensured that participants received holistic, multi-disciplinary training applicable to diverse clinical environments.
A defining milestone of EMINDIA 2026 was the official national launch of Vigyan Central, a cutting-edge publication and digital portal conceptualized by Dr. Sagar Galwankar to serve as a high-impact repository and peer-reviewed engine dedicated to showcasing indigenous clinical research, low-cost medical innovations, and context-specific health systems data generated across the Global South.
A major focal point of the multi-day congress was the two-day World Health Organisation South-East Asia Collaborating Center for Emergency & Trauma (WHO CCET) stakeholder and implementation meeting. Under the leadership of INDUSEM leader and Professor & Head of Emergency Medicine at APEX Trauma Center AIIMS New Delhi, Prof. Sanjeev Bhoi, invited stakeholder experts from across India deliberated on actionable, scalable roadmaps for standardized national emergency care frameworks, pre-hospital triage networks, and regional trauma registries. These deliberations emphasized the urgent need for unified emergency response protocols, interoperable communication systems, and robust quality-assurance metrics across state and national healthcare tiers. The collaborative frameworks established during these sessions are poised to guide governmental policy and institutional practice for the next decade.
The formal inaugural ceremony held at K N Uduppa on 11th September served as a prestigious platform to honor clinical excellence and visionary leadership through fellowships and awards. FACEE Fellowships were awarded to distinguished scholars recognizing their commitment to advancing emergency medicine education and sub-specialization across India. Additionally, Ashwamegh Fellowships were conferred upon pioneering physicians and operational leaders. Furthermore, the INDUSEM Awards celebrated the monumental contributions of visionary pioneers whose decades of tireless academic advocacy, curriculum design, and institutional building have successfully established modern emergency medicine as an indispensable pillar of modern healthcare.
The academic excitement reached its peak on September 13 with the introduction of the EM Games. This innovative, high-octane competitive showdown tested tactical emergency response, inter-professional communication, and clinical agility under simulated high-pressure crises, perfectly reinforcing the congress’s emphasis on practical competency. The seamless execution of this monumental event was driven by robust institutional leadership. Dr. Sagar Galwankar provided overarching strategic academic direction and championed broad-based professional recognition systems, while Prof. (Dr.) Bikram K. Gupta anchored the core logistical execution as Organising Secretary for EMINDIA 2026. Institutional backing was secured through Vice-Chancellor Prof. Ajit Kumar Chaturvedi as Chief Guest, IMS-BHU Director Prof. S.N. Sankhwar as Organising Chairperson, Sir Sundarlal Hospital Medical Superintendent Prof. Puneet, and Faculty of Medicine Dean Prof. Sanjay Gupta as Co-organising Chairpersons.
