The Department of Emergency Medicine, Jubilee Mission Medical College & Research Institute, Thrissur, successfully conducted the 10th edition of eXamthalon X – A Decade of Excellence on 12th and 13th July 2026, marking a significant milestone in postgraduate Emergency Medicine education. Organized under the auspices of the Emergency Medicine Association (EMA), the program brought together Emergency Medicine faculty and postgraduate residents from across the country for two days of immersive academic learning and board examination simulation.
Over the past decade, eXamthalon has evolved from a departmental initiative into one of India’s most recognized and comprehensive Emergency Medicine examination simulation program. Designed to closely replicate the MD and DNB practical examinations, it continues to provide residents with an opportunity to assess themselves under realistic examination conditions while receiving structured feedback from experienced faculty members.
This landmark tenth edition introduced the Resident Summit, a first-of-its-kind academic platform preceding the practical examination simulation.
*Real-Time Case Presentation – residents presenting clinical case to senior examiners as part of the exam simulation
The summit featured board-style multidisciplinary case discussions with faculty from Dermatology, Ophthalmology, ENT, Orthopedics, Obstetrics & Gynecology and other allied specialties along with seasoned EM faculties, enabling residents to appreciate the interdisciplinary nature of Emergency Medicine while preparing for university examinations.
Another major highlight was UPDATE-X, a series of focused, high-yield sessions on recent advances across multiple specialties, followed by an interactive keynote lecture, “The Administrative Pearls They Don’t Teach Us in Residency,” which explored leadership, departmental management, decision-making, and career development beyond residency. Delegates also benefited from an engaging session, “Cracking the Quiz & Exam Code – How Champions Prepare, Think & Win,”, which shared practical strategies for effective learning and examination success.
*OSCE Skill Stations in Progress – Residents performing hands-on assessments at manned OSCE stations during the mock exam simulation
The second day featured the flagship MD/DNB Practical Examination Simulation, where delegates participated in real patient long case presentations, Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) stations, spotters, and viva voce, closely replicating the structure and rigor of the university practical examination. Standardized checklists, structured scoring, and individualized feedback ensured a fair and objective assessment while helping participants identify strengths and areas requiring further preparation.
One of the defining strengths of eXamthalon continues to be its faculty-driven model. More than 50 faculty members from medical colleges and hospitals across India volunteered their time to mentor residents and serve as examiners. The program has always believed that its greatest strength lies not merely in recreating an examination, but in creating an environment where experienced teachers demonstrate the ideal approach to clinical reasoning, communication, and patient management.
*Inauguration ceremony of Examthalon X and Resident Summit
The program was inaugurated by Rev. Fr. Renny Mundenkurian, Director, Jubilee Mission Medical College & Research Institute. Felicitations were offered by Dr. Shibu C. Kallivalappil, Medical Superintendent; Rev. Fr. Terin Mullakkara, Assistant Director (Medical Education); and Dr. Akhil S. L., Under Secretary, EMA South Zone. Dr. P. C. Rajeev, Organizing Convenor, welcomed the gathering and reflected on the decade-long journey of eXamthalon, while Dr. Deo Mathew, Organizing Secretary, and Dr. Jogi, Joint Secretary, proposed the vote of thanks.
Reflecting on the program Dr. P. C. Rajeev remarked,
“Ten years ago, eXamthalon began with a simple objective—to help residents face their board examinations with confidence. Today, it has grown into a collaborative academic movement built on mentorship, innovation, and a shared commitment to excellence in Emergency Medicine education.”
The response from delegates was overwhelmingly positive, with participants appreciating the realism of the examination simulation, the quality of faculty interaction, and the multidisciplinary academic sessions introduced this year. The newly introduced Resident Summit was particularly well-received and is expected to become a permanent feature of future editions.
As eXamthalon enters its second decade, it continues to uphold its guiding philosophy—“FastTrack Your Way to Success”—while reaffirming its commitment to fostering clinical excellence, standardized assessment, academic collaboration, and the development of confident, competent Emergency Physicians.
Dr. Deo Mathew & Dr Jogi Varghese, the organizing team noted that the excellent response to the newly introduced Resident Summit and multispecialty case discussions has encouraged the organizing committee to expand the program in future editions. Plans are underway to broaden the academic content to better engage first- and second-year Emergency Medicine residents, while also increasing the number of participants accommodated each year, thereby extending the educational impact of eXamthalon to a larger postgraduate audience.
Participant Feedback 1
“eXamthalon X exceeded my expectations. The Resident Summit, multidisciplinary case discussions, and practical examination simulation complemented each other perfectly. It wasn’t just about preparing for the university examination—it improved the way we approach patients in the Emergency Department. The faculty were approachable, encouraging, and generous in sharing their experience. This is definitely a program every Emergency Medicine resident should attend at least once before the boards.”

Participant Feedback 2
“The realism of the examination simulation was remarkable. From the long case presentations to the OSCEs, spotters, and viva sessions, everything closely reflected the actual board examination. The individualized feedback helped me identify my weaknesses and gave me a clear direction for the weeks leading up to my exams. The Update-X sessions and Administrative Pearls were added bonuses that made the program relevant not only for examinations but also for our future careers.”
