INDUSEM Leader Dr Vimal Krishnan Surendran Pillai, receives accolades and congratulations as he achieved the historic benchmark of being the first residency trained Government of India & National Medical Commission (NMC) recognized Legitimate Post Graduate “MD Emergency Medicine” Degree Holding Emergency Medicine Specialist from India to successfully complete the Prestigious and Distinguished International FAIMER fellowship.

FAIMER is an international fellowship rated highly among medical educators globally and is currently accepted as an additional qualification under NMC in India.

There is a huge need for standardising medical education across allopathic medical and surgical specialities in India including Emergency Medicine. Skills for being an effective educator are equally important when Standardization of Education must be achieved.

Keeping the above need in mind Dr. Vimal enrolled in the FAIMER Program in 2019. His area of interest was on developing simulation-based training initiatives for Interprofessional teams as a preparedness exercise for mass casualty events. This focus area helped him further his work as COVID ravaged the whole world. The completion of his simulation-based project marks a significant factor in him achieving this FAIMER Recognition.

Academically Dr Vimal Pillai is also a part of the National Mentor Faculty Pool for ASHWAMEGH – The Academic Emergency Medicine Faculty Development Program (FDP) in India. ASHWAMEGH is operated by All India Institute of Medical Sciences, (AIIMS) Nagpur under the aegis of The World Health Organization Collaborating Centre for Emergency and Trauma (WHO-CCET) in South-East Asia. The need for standardising post graduate education in Emergency Medicine is the mission of ‘ASHWAMEGH’. The curated ASHWAMEGH FDP is unique, interactive, and innovative.

Professionally Dr. Vimal is a Faculty at the MAHE Emergency Medicine Residency Program at Manipal and serves as the Principal Secretary for the Emergency Medicine Association (EMA) India. In his capacity as EMA Principal Secretary Dr. Vimal is a part of the Governing Council of The Academic College of Emergency Experts (ACEE), India.

“Dr. Vimal Pillai has been a part of the INDUSEM movement for more than a decade. Vimal is a hard-core academician who is focussed on the patient centred model in academic emergency medicine. He has always had great potential which INDUSEM recognized back in 2015 when he was the recipient of the SAKSHAM CHATRA PARITOSHIK. We at INDUSEM are very proud of him as he achieves another feather in his cap. Being the First FAIMER International Fellow from the Speciality of Emergency Medicine in India is a distinct and sentinel moment in the history of Academic Emergency Medicine in India and his personal life. We wish him all the best.” Remarked Chief Advisor of ASHWAMEGH and INDUSEM CEO Dr. Sagar Galwankar.
