The World Academic Council of Emergency Medicine Section for Crisis Leadership and Disaster Management held its TOPCOM Regional Congress with Nepal in December 2023.

TOPCOM: Tabletop Exercise and Communication in Crisis and Disaster Medicine.

Tabletop Exercise & Communication Model is a focused, comprehensive skills endeavor that has been effectively adopted by the various agencies of the international community. It is an activity in which key personnel assigned emergency management roles and responsibilities are gathered to discuss various simulated emergency situations in a non-threatening and stressless environment. It uses written and verbal scenarios to evaluate the effectiveness of a facility’s overall disaster plan and coordination. Members review and discuss the actions they would take in a particular emergency, testing their emergency plan. Tabletop exercises are used to clarify roles & responsibilities & identify mitigation & preparedness needs. The exercise results in action plans for continued quality improvement of the emergency plan.

The origins of TOPCOM Meeting are the execution of its Datuk Dr Mohamed Alwi bin Abd Rahman, The 2020 Secretary General of WACEM. He has organized TOPCOM in Malaysia annually since 2013. In 2021 TOPCOM became an official section of WACEM joining the WACEM Sections on BIG DATA, POCUS, SIMULATION and Women Leadership.
